CriticalThinkers

Free · Grade R to Grade 12 · South Africa

Raising a generation who can think for themselves.

Free, CAPS-aligned critical-thinking lessons for South African kids, Grade R to 12 — built for homes, classrooms, and homeschooling families. Question, weigh reasons, see other points of view. One step at a time.

Sawubona — “I see you.” We start from a simple South African idea: your child’s mind matters, and we think better together.

Every lesson is free to learn — and always will be. Optional Plus tools are coming for families and schools who want more.

The stakes · why this matters now

The numbers are hard. The response is hope, and action.

Reading for meaning is the soil critical thinking grows in. When most children can’t yet read for meaning, teaching them how to think — to question, to weigh reasons, to see other viewpoints — matters more, not less. These are national figures, sourced and labelled — not our platform’s data.

The goal we’re working toward: In 2019 the President set the goal that every 10-year-old should be able to read for meaning by 2030. (source)

PIRLS (reading) and TIMSS (maths and science) measure foundations for critical thinking, not critical thinking itself. We don’t overstate what they show.

The case for critical thinking

A child who can question a claim, weigh the evidence and still hear another point of view becomes a citizen who can build a country.

South Africa’s future will be written by people who can tell fact from spin, resist misinformation, reason together across difference, and change their minds when the evidence does. That isn’t a luxury subject — it’s the groundwork of democracy. And it grows best when it’s planted early, at the kitchen table and the chalkboard alike.

“Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” — a person is a person through other people. We think better together.

So here’s why we start young

Habits of mind form young.

Our lessons start at Grade R with looking, noticing, and asking good questions — built on the Ubuntu thinking already in the work: “Sawubona — I see you,” “your story matters,” “we think better together.” Critical thinking isn’t a subject; it’s a way of being in the world, and it’s easiest to grow early.

Question

Ask “why?” and “how do we know?” instead of taking things at face value.

Weigh evidence

Tell the difference between a strong reason and a loud opinion.

See other eyes

Understand that two people can look at one thing and both be partly right.

Change your mind

Update what you believe when the facts change — that’s strength, not weakness.

And here’s how it works

Three simple steps — at home or in class.

Tell us your child’s age. We place them in the right South African grade and phase automatically.

Learn step by step

One lesson unlocks the next, so there is always a clear “what’s next” — structure without having to plan a curriculum yourself.

Guide together

Parents guide kids, homeschoolers lead at home, teachers guide a class. Track progress and scores as they grow.

Built for the people who guide them

One platform, three ways to teach.

For parents

You don’t need to be an expert.

Simple, daily ways to raise a thinker — short lessons, plain language, and good questions you can ask at the kitchen table. We do the planning; you do the guiding.

For homeschoolers

A ready critical-thinking spine.

A CAPS-aligned thinking curriculum you can teach at home, no lesson-planning required. Step-by-step unlocking gives real structure and a clear “what’s next”, so the path is mapped from Grade R to matric.

For teachers

CAPS-aligned and classroom-ready.

Teacher-led modes for the early grades, with opening stories, circle-time prompts, and ready-to-run activities. Built to drop into a real South African classroom.

What’s inside

A path from Grade R to matric.

Lessons are organised into the four South African phases. Each builds on the last — from noticing the world, to weighing evidence, to building and breaking arguments. That’s the spine a homeschooling family or a classroom can follow all the way through. See the full curriculum.
